Chiang Mai

 

   

 

 

Chiang Mai is the most important city of Thailand in the north (Map Chiangmai ). Chiang Mai is the provincial capital of large mountainous province, nicknamed the rose of the north and the third city of Thailand. It has more than 175,000 inhabitants. Chiang Mai lies 700 km north of Bangkok and have been founded in 1296. It has been lain in a fertile fall slate on 300 meters above the sea mirror. Chiang Mai is the capital of the Lanna Thai (the kingdom of a million rice plantations) and was the first Thai kingdom within the acquaintance applied Triangle.

SONGKRAN: This festival celebrates the traditional Thai new year with religious pilgrim rides, beautiful parades, dancing, throw benediction and much water to each other.


LOI KRATONG: People leave themselves concerning rivers and canals sailed too under the eye of the full moon, small boats of banana leaf with a small candle, incense, flowers and coins, honour the water spirits and wash away already it negative of the previous year.

A large part of the tourist attractions in Chiang Mai is formed by the many temples which the city richly is. Moreover there is still an impressive museum

CHIANG MAI NATIONAL MUSEUM
(beside what Chet Yot): The museum has a collection of Lanna Thai art objects, old Buddha images and war weapons. The museum has been opened daily, except on Monday, Tuesday and on public holidays, of 09.00-12.00 hours and of 13.00-16.00 hours.

From Mae Rim you take the highway 107 to Chiang Mai, in Chiang Mai you go right up to the superhighway, after 500 are you at Chet Yot and the museum.



WHAT PHRA SING
(Sam Lan Rd.): This beautiful temple dates back to 1345 and is of the important places of the Songkran festival of 13-15 April, when people saint Phra Buddha Sihing bathes picture.

The temple lies in the old centre (old city) and is worth a visit  (see photo' s here under).

 

   

WHAT DUANG DOK
(Suthep Rd.): This temple has been built in the 14e centuries in a pleasure garden of the Lanna Thai monarches. It is a favorite place for photographers, in particular because of the sun perditions superb. The 500 years old source Buddha picture is one of Thailand largest metal Buddha images.

Lies exactly outside the old centre, along this road you can also find what U-Mong.

WHAT CHIANG MAN
(ratchaphakhinai Rd.): These Chiang Mai's oldest temple are and date back to 1296. The temple was the house of king Mengrai, the founder of Chiang Mai.

This temple also lies in the old centre (old city) and is also worth a visit (see photo' s here under).

 

   



WHAT CHEDI LUANG
(Phrapokklao Rd.): This temple has an enormous pagoda, original 280 feet high, and has been partly devastated by an ear tremor in 1545. In former days the well-known Emerald Buddha in this temple lived, now to see in boasted what Phra Kaeo in Bangkok. Impressive dragons in front decorates the staircase.

This temple is also in the old centre (old city) and is also worth visiting (see photo' s here under).

Markets

Also the markets in Chiang Mai are certainly worth a visit :

Night Bazaar to find on Changklan Road (you walk from Thapae Gate to the Ping river,  before you reach ping river on your right-hand side is the night bazaar), market starts at 7 in the evening. Especially clothing you can buy here against very pleasant prices.

Warorot Market to find in the street opposite Changklan Road (on Thapae Road you do not go right to the night bazaar but to left), the market is visited mainly by the thai. It is a real market, they sell everything, also a lo of clothing. For purchase of golden jewels you will succeed here certainly, at the beginning of the market there are many goldshops. Market stops at 5.30. The streets around the market are also certainly worth a visit, here are many nice shops.

Sunday Market to find on Sunday in the old centre (old city), market starts at 4 in the afternoon. The best place to buy your souvenirs.

Flower market to find along the ping river, the name says it already, here are sold mainly flowers. It is a splendid face these market booths with their displayed flowers. Market starts at 7 in the evening.

Many attractions of Chiang Mai are exactly outside the city.

WHAT PHRA TAT DOI SUTHEP:
This temple is Chiang Mai's most important and most visible recognition point. It looks out concerning the city from bey mount area. What Phra That Doi Suthep lie 15 km of the city, on 3520 feet above sea level. The temple dates from 1383. The temple can be reached by climbing steep examines staircase with 290 treden. The less vigorous visitor can take a cablecar to the top. The golden pagoda of the temple contains saint Buddha relics and impregnates Buddhist pilgrims from the complete world, the whole year. Temple complex offers city and surroundings to a superb view concerning Chiang Mai.

For a visit to the suthep mountain you need 2 days, at the foot of the mount there is the memorial statue of Kruba (see photo 1) and the Huay Kaew water fall (a splendid and cold spot for a picnic). As from the foot of the mount to the doi Suthep temple you come along Pha Ngoeb rock and the Mon Tha Than water fall. After your visit to the doi suthep temple you continue your way to the top (doi) of the mount and you come along phuhing palace (outside stay of the royal family), arrived on the top you can visit 2 hill tribe villages (Hmong Doi Pu and Hmong Khun Chang Kian). Entry Doi Suthep temple 30 baht per person. Entry Mon Tha Than water fall 50 baht per person (cars 30 baht).



PHUHING PALACE:
These is located on the same road as the Doi Suthep temple, on 22 km of the city . The royal winter palace has been built in 1962. Tribal research Institute (Chiang Mai university) stays here: This is a permanent cultural exhibition concerning one in the north. The centre has been opened on Monday - Friday, of 08.30-12.00 hours and of 13.00-16.30 hours.
 
CHIANG MAI ZOO:
This artistically created complex lies on the lower lain grown over hillocks of the Suthep mount, and contains a fascinating collectie Asian and African mammals and birds.

The zoo lies on the way to the Doi Suthep temple, what makes this zoo, however, complete particular is the presence of 2  giant panda' s (see photo' s under). Entry zoo is 100 baht per person. Entry panda' s 100 baht per person.

water fall (beside the zoo, beginning of the suthep mount): A beautiful spot for a picnic. At the entrance you find enough Thai foodshops. 

Mae Sa water fall: On the way Mae Rim - Sa Moeng, beautiful water fall with a beautiful walking trail.
MAE KLANG water fall: This is Chiang Mai's most photographed water fall and lies on approximately 58 kilometres at west of the city, to the foot of the Doi Inthanon mount. A superb spot for a picnic.
MAE YA water fall: On approximately 12 kilometres of Chom Thong and this is one of the highest water falls in Thailand.

Route Mae Rim - Sa Moeng

This route is a real must, the road lies on a couple minutes of the house and along this road there are a lot of curiosities to see. Directly at the beginning there is the Tiger Kingdom (www.tigerkingdom.com) where you can lie litterally in the arms of a tiger!!!

This is also the way to the Mae Sa elephant camp, on your way to the elephant camp you come along: orchid  farms, butterfly farms, water falls and companies who offer excursions. It is possible to make a trip on a horse into the mounts.

After the elephant camp you follow a splendid road through the mounts with breathtaking panoramas and splendid rice fields.

On your way back you can drive back to Mae Rim through Hang Dong and Chiang Mai.

In Hang Dong you can take the road to Ban Thawai, you can see a lot of furnitureshops here. The furniture is handmade.

On the way Hang Dong - Chiang Mai you come along the Old Chiang Mai Centre (highway 108 and road 1009): here Lanna Thai dance are intensified during Kantoke diners.


DOI INTHANON National park:
This park of 1005 square kilometre covers the highest mount of Thailand (2,565 meters altitude). Here are a number of beautiful water falls such as the Wachirathan, the Siriphum and Mae pan water falls. In this area are also a number of villages of the Karen and Meo hill tribes. The forest above 1,800 meters is covert with wild orchids and lichens. From Mae Rim to Chom Thong is approximately a 1.5 hour drive (to Chiang Mai and then the highway 108), from Chom Thong it is approximately 40 km to the top. Directly at the foot of the Inthanon you can visit the Mae Ya water fall, a splendid water fall which is 280 m. high.

If you continue your way to the top you come along the Mae Klang water fall, the most beautiful water fall of Thailand. Before you reach the top you can visit the splendid temple complex Nabhamethanidol - Nabhapolbhumisiri , given by the Thai airforce for king Bhumi its 80e anniversary. For Thai terms a very modern and tight temple complex with beautiful gardens. 

With a little bit luck you have a splendid view concerning the surroundings, on the top it is generally cloudy. Entry Doi Inthanon is 100 baht per person (car 30 baht). Cards are valid for the complete park (also the water falls). Entry Nabhamethanidol - Nabhapolbhumisiri is 100 baht per person.

 

   



Elephants training centres:
Each morning, on the Mae rim - Sa moeng route, elephants train their formidable and  highly valued competences. They do this 3 times a day ( 07.45, 09.45 and 13.45 ) at the Mae Sa elephants training centre. Shows are nice, the elephants show you all kind of things, among other things that they can play soccer and paint. The centre lies on approximately 30 km of the city ( Chiang Mai ). The admission is 120 Baht per person. It is possible after the show to make several excursions on a elephant, a jungle excursion of 1 hour costs 600 Baht per person If you take from Mae Rim the highway 107 to the north (direction Fang) you encounters several elephant camps (among other things Mae Ta man and Mae Taeng). Elephant camps are easy to find and the way to the camps are well indicated. .

Mae Taeng Elephant Camp: On km56 on highway 107 ( direction Fang ) here are daily from 09.00 - 11.00, shows of working elephants. Also it is possible to make a journey on a elephant and it is possible to raft and make jungle treks.

CHIANG DAO caves
In these caves lives a holy Buddha picture. It is possible to make a cavejourney with a local guide.

From Mae Rim you take the highway 107 ( direction Fang ), you end up then automatically in Chiang Dao.

warm water sources
FANG warm water sources: In Ban Pin, 163 km at north of Chiang Mai there are 50 warm water sources in splendid, wooded surroundings. Three sources cook ongoing and give a continuous sulphur fragrance. The temperature of the water in the sources vary between 90-100 degrees Celcius.

From Mae Rim you take highway 107 to Fang.

SAN KAMPHAENG warm water sources: Lain on 36 km of the city, in the middle of natural surroundings of trees and grew over hillocks. The water contains much sulphur and has a healing functioning. There is accommodation, a swimming pool, a restaurant and they have separated mineral water bathrooms.
